If you spend a lot of time reading about cars on the internet, as we do, you’ve probably noticed a slew of overwhelmingly positive publicity about the Audi Concept C EV Prototype. This happens whenever automakers come up with something truly innovative and earth-shaking. Right now, our information about the Audi Concept C is sparse. Aside from those who saw the vehicle debut in Milan, attended the IAA Mobility 2025 conference in Munich, or were among select lucky test drivers, very few people have seen the Concept C in person.
Many auto experts are hailing this as Audi’s major move in innovating the entire automotive market. You might find yourself squinting at the press pictures, trying to figure out how this futuristic, minimalist coupe is going to redefine cars as we know them. To be fair, it’s hard to get a lot of information from pictures. However, if we take a step back and look at Audi and the automotive world in general, it’s a little easier to see what all the hype is about. While it’s a little soon to use words like “revolutionary,” it’s clear that the Audi Concept C EV prototype has the potential to be a very big deal.
What’s Going on at Audi?
New and exciting things are happening at Audi. With the installation of new Chief Creative Officer Massimo Frascella in 2024, the overall vibe at Audi has gone under intense internal scrutiny. As is true of many auto brands, the “should we/shouldn’t we” dilemma of eclectic vehicles has left Audi execs unsure of where to invest their attention.
However, Audi has made two distinct moves that seem to solidify their positioning. First, Audi has committed to a fully electric introductory model with production beginning in 2026. The auto manufacturer is securing partnerships with other auto makers for software and engineering development. Though Audi has confirmed re-engineering of the combustion engine, it seems that they are committed to electric and hybrid vehicles. Granted, the brand has an exceptional following in Europe, China, and a die-hard following in North America, making the precarious U.S. positioning on EVs less of a risk.
Audi has also announced that they will enter Formula 1 in 2026. That means they’ll need an incredibly fast, agile vehicle. While it doesn’t seem likely that the Concept C EV is destined for the 24 Hours of Le Mans like the 2003 quattro concept car, it is a sign that Audi is truly focused on a two-seat sports car with obscene speed.
Where Does the Audi Concept C EV Prototype Fit In?
At the debut of the Audi Concept C in Milan, Audi also announced its commitment to “clarity, technicality, intelligence, and emotion.” Even to seasoned automotive fanatics, these terms sound a little esoteric and hard to connect to a car’s philosophy. However, Audi’s team has carefully elucidated this concept.
“Audi has always been a daring brand. The brightest moments in our history have involved daring leaps of imagination and innovation, cutting-edge technology, and groundbreaking design. Now it is time to dare again,” Chief Creative Officer Massimo Frascella stated at the Milan presentation, where the concept car stood dramatically under a drapery reading, “This is just the beginning.”
In fact, CEO Gernot Döllner seemed to confirm that the Concept C EV embodied the brand’s new outlook. “The Audi Concept C embodies what Audi design will stand for in the future: clarity and a reduction to the essentials, including in the interior,” he stated, noting that the “operating concept combines minimalist design with a wide range of functionality.”
Looking at the Concept C EV prototype, we see a vehicle with clean, minimal lines. With what has been revealed about the EV so far, it seems that the concept of “radical simplicity” involves as few interruptions in the way the eye travels around the exterior and interior of this new vehicle. This lack of interruptions then allows the driver to focus on the driving experience and the emotional connection that comes with high-performance vehicles. Putting it that way, it sounds as though Audi is looking to return driving to a time when driving was a connection between car and driver, when hitting the brake and the accelerator felt like an agreement between human and machine, all in the presence of nature.
What We Know So Far: Exterior Features
Audi has been very forthcoming about its design principles and driving philosophy. However, they have been more than a little coy in divulging specifics about the Concept C EV prototype. We do know it was inspired by the 1936 Auto Union Type C and the third-generation A6. In fact, the more we look at the Concept C, the more we see the Audi silhouette, but simplified.
The Concept C will have a central-battery layout. We’re not saying this is related to the mid-engine setup of Formula 1 vehicles, but it wouldn’t be so wild to think that Audi might be trying out some functionality at the road-legal level, especially now that hybrid vehicles are making their way on the F1 courses. We also know that the Concept C will feature the first electrically retractable hardtop on an Audi roadster. Allowing both open-air and enclosed driving is enticing, and Audi assures us that the dual roof elements won’t compromise the vehicle’s overall geometry.
What We Know So Far: Interior Features
The clean, uninterrupted lines continue within the cabin. Audi has termed this the “shy interior,” due to its utter simplicity. The 10.4-inch touchscreen display can be folded out of view, and it has brought back the “Audi click” with haptic controls on the steering wheel and buttons and switches that provide identical audio and sensory feedback. Audi actually revolutionized interiors around 20 years ago with the “click,” and its return marks a serious change in automotive philosophy. Maybe we do spend too much time tapping around on our touchscreens. Perhaps we have too much access to media when we’re behind the wheel, too many opportunities to micromanage our commute, and not enough focus on how truly enjoyable the mere act of driving can be.
The interior of the Concept C EV is zen-like, with warm titanium hues, aluminum accents, and a blend of natural and ambient light. It’s minimal, uncomplicated, and definitely doesn’t steal attention from the vehicle’s operation. That does seem to meet the expectations of “clarity, technicality, intelligence, and emotion.”
Will the Audi Concept C EV Change the World?
For some, the immersion into the passion of driving will reawaken the love of a good, long drive. The purity of the design and simplicity of the cabin will remind us of the thrill of accelerating, and the little heartbeat skip that comes with hitting highly tuned brakes at just the right point on a curvy road. All told, this electric roadster has the makings of being something really big. Remember when we first got our driver’s licenses, and going on long drives alone was the ultimate level of freedom? Wouldn’t it be nice to get that feeling back? Maybe the Concept C is what we need to point us in that direction.
