For shoppers looking for a three-row crossover SUV, the all-new 2024 Chevy Traverse offers the right fit. Chevrolet designed it for drivers who need a blend of spaciousness, power, and versatility. Ideal for large families, avid adventurers, or anyone who needs to tow up to 5,000 lbs while hauling a week’s worth of luggage, the Traverse offers a commendable balance of passenger comfort, raw power, and cargo space. It provides the assurance to transport a soccer team or manage a weekend getaway and then conquer the weekly grocery haul with ease.
When the first generation of the Traverse debuted in 2009, it filled a void in the market for a three-row SUV that didn’t compromise on elegance. As an eight-seat crossover, it nestles comfortably in Chevrolet’s lineup between the midsize Blazer and the larger, truck-based Suburban and Tahoe. It competes with models like the Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, and Kia Telluride, but it tops them all with best-in-class cargo space. It all adds up to a uniquely capable yet civilized full-size people-hauler. With an estimated starting price under $40,000, the new 2024 Traverse is also one of the better bargains in its segment.
All-New Design
Chevy redesigned the Traverse for its third generation in 2024, aiming for a sportier and more truck-like demeanor that’s more capable than ever on and off-road. Its new grille is visibly inspired by the front ends of Chevy truck models like the Silverado, while a new, boxier silhouette hints at its more muscular nature. The wheels are pushed out to the corners for a more aggressive stance.
The sportiest version of the new Traverse is the RS trim, with high-gloss black wheels and blacked-out grille and bumpers. These accents complement its Jet Black leather-trimmed seats with red accents, while 22-inch wheels and standard trailering equipment help the RS back up its looks with performance and utility.
Despite the Traverse’s new-found muscle, it doesn’t compromise on comfort and cargo room. Meanwhile, befitting a family-oriented SUV, passenger safety is still at the top of the Traverse’s mission statement. Add in a range of trims, including the sporty RS and the new off-road-oriented Z71, and there’s a 2024 Traverse out there for nearly every need.
True SUV Utility
The 2024 Traverse offers a new engine that is standard across all four trim levels: a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder that pumps out 328 hp. That’s 18 hp more than last year’s V6-powered Traverse. Crucially, it also offers considerably more torque, coming at 326 lb-ft compared to last year’s 266 lb-ft. That gives it quite a bit more grunt for pulling its way through tough terrain. While the 5,000 lb tow rating is unchanged from last year, drivers will find it much easier and more comfortable to haul jet skis, snowmobiles, and small to medium boats with the extra torque.
In two-wheel drive models, this power is delivered to the front wheels by means of an eight-speed automatic transmission. However, all-wheel drive is optional on most trim levels. The Z71 comes standard with a twin-clutch all-wheel drive system, which delivers the best traction and handling in off-road conditions or on slippery streets. The extra power and the available all-wheel drive systems strengthen the Traverse’s value proposition as a truly capable SUV.
The 2024 Traverse’s 98 cu.ft. of cargo volume is best-in-class. Both rows of rear seats fold flat to accomplish this. The second row offers a choice of a three-person bench seat or optional dual captain’s chairs, while the third row features a 60/40-split bench, so you have a range of seating and cargo configurations to choose from. Making it easier to access the cargo area is an optional hands-free Smart Sense Liftgate.
Entertainment and Comfort
The 2024 Chevy Traverse’s interior layout emphasizes its modern design philosophy while prioritizing the comfort of the driver and passengers. The first thing that will catch your eye is the best-in-class 17.7-inch color touchscreen. This huge display serves as the central hub for the model’s extensive connectivity features. It’s set adjacent to the digital driver display so you can easily see navigation and more without obstructing your view of the road.
As you turn around and sweep your gaze back through the cabin, you’ll notice that this improved view continues all the way back, thanks to a lower beltline. Chevy’s designers and engineers have made quite an effort to make the new Traverse more open and spacious than its predecessor, emphasizing its huge interior volume that can hold as many as eight passengers and their cargo.
For those seeking extra luxury and warmth, the 2024 Traverse offers options like heated first and second-row seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated outside mirrors. The upholstery options are also abundant. Premium Evotex seating surfaces are available for the LT and Z71 trims, while leather-appointed seating for the first and second rows is a standard feature on the RS.
Eight-passenger seating with second and third-row bench seats comes standard on the LS trim level, while seven-passenger seating with second-row captain’s chairs is standard on the LT, Z71, and RS. Eight-passenger seating is an option on the LT, but not the higher trims. In models with second-row captain’s chairs, SmartSlide offers easier access to the third row. The RS features a one-touch folding second row, along with a power-folding third row.
Keeping your passengers connected as well as comfortable is a priority in the 2024 Traverse. Features such as wireless phone charging and an integrated Wi-Fi hotspot elevate its tech-savviness. A half dozen USB ports can keep everyone’s devices charged, underscoring Chevrolet’s commitment to user convenience.
Safety for All
The 2024 Traverse keeps everyone safe, and not just its occupants. The standard Chevy Safety Assist suite even includes features like Front Pedestrian Braking with Bicycle Mitigation and IntelliBeam high-beam management to help keep others on the road safe. Chevy Safety Assist also has Forward Collision Alert, Automatic Emergency Braking, Following Distance Indicator, and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning.
A long list of other safety features come standard, too. For example, the Safety Alert Seat vibrates in the direction that sensors detect a potential crash to help avoid accidents. Other features include Rear Park Assist, a rear vision camera, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Braking, Speed Limit Assist, and Traffic Sign Recognition. There is also Side Bicyclist Alert and Rear Pedestrian Alert. Intersection Automatic Emergency Braking and Reverse Automatic Braking provide even more driver assistance.
To help the driver make sure all passengers are safe, the 2024 Traverse includes a Rear Seat Belt Reminder and a Buckle to Drive tool that requires the driver to buckle up before driving can begin. The MyChevy app includes a Teen Driver mode for parents’ peace of mind.
Four Flavors for More Fun
We’ve already met the sporty RS edition of the 2024 Traverse. It is designed to be the sweet spot for those looking for an SUV with a high-performance twist. In the middle of the trim lineup is the LT, which comes with SmartSlide seating, a power driver seat, the Smart Sense liftgate, optional Super Cruise hands-free driving, and an available sunroof.
New for 2024 is the Z71 off-road trim. We’ve mentioned its twin-clutch all-wheel drive system earlier, but this version includes the full range of off-road features. Its ground clearance receives a one-inch boost above other Traverse trims, while the Z71’s unique front fascia enables a better approach angle. Other trail-oriented features include all-terrain tires, unique dampers, Hill Descent Control, an aluminum skid plate, and a driver-selectable Specific Terrain Mode. A trailering package comes standard.
A Sleeper in the Segment
The RS and Z71 trims are the ultimate expression of the redesigned 2024 Traverse’s new, more adventurous mission. However, every trim benefits from tons of new tech and convenience features as well as best-in-class interior volume for passengers and cargo. In any trim level, the Traverse is perhaps the sleeper of the three-row SUV segment, surprising drivers with its all-around excellence.
