Naming a vehicle after a natural wonder or national park is nothing new in the automotive world. From Maine’s Acadia National Park to Alaska’s Denali National Park and everywhere in between, these names literally span the country from sea to shining sea. However, the trend isn’t limited to model names; American locales lend their names to a wide range of individual trims. Just take the 2026 Ford Bronco, for example.
The off-road SUV burst back onto the scene in 2021 and has offered several location-inspired names in the years since. Past examples included an Everglades option that was ready to get wet and wild with 35-inch mud-terrain tires and a factory-installed snorkel that allowed the SUV to ford more than 36 inches of water. The Everglades left the lineup following the 2024 model year, but the 2026 Bronco still honors three of America’s most stunning natural destinations with the Big Bend, Badlands, and Outer Banks trims.
Crafted with off-road success in mind, these three variants would have no trouble navigating through their respective namesakes, especially when you factor in the go-anywhere potential of the Ford’s Goes Over Any Terrain (GOAT) modes. As we celebrate the arrival of the 2026 Ford Bronco, I thought I’d compile a little 4WD road trip that’ll take us from South Dakota down to North Carolina and all the way to the southern border, so strap in as we hit the highway and see how these Bronco trims live up to their names.
Big Bend
- GPS Coordinates: 29.2498° N, 103.2502° W
- Designed For: Wandering the Desert
Marked by its rugged, arid landscape, West Texas is a land unto itself. It takes a special kind of vehicle to handle the hostile Chihuahuan Desert terrain, but the Ford Bronco is up to the task. Slotting in just above the entry-level Base trim, the Big Bend sees the SUV infused with a few key features that are sure to prove their worth when you venture off the grid.
The Bronco Big Bend is powered by the same 2.3L 300 hp turbocharged engine as the Base trim, and includes the same Terrain management system with six distinct drive modes. Like the Base, the trim also features a comprehensive suite of standard safety tech and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Off-road-specific features like Hill Descent Control and Trail Turn Assist take the stress out of the experience, with Ford leveraging the latest tech to navigate even the trickiest trail.
The Big Bend ups the ante with a full-size spare tire, 17-inch alloy wheels in an exclusive carbonized gray hue, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter. The full-size spare is especially enticing, allowing drivers to confidently continue their journey even after a blowout or puncture. You’ll also find innovative ADAS features, including a blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-keeping assistance.
While the off-road equipment certainly sweetens the pot, the trim’s biggest selling point is the available Mid Package. The Mid Package significantly improves the SUV’s comfort and convenience, with some handy features that are sure to make for a better driving experience. It includes keyless entry, remote start, a built-in navigation system, dual-zone automatic climate control, and heated front seats. The Big Bend might just be the most value-packed model on the 2026 roster.
Outer Banks
- GPS Coordinates: 35.5585° N, 75.4665° W
- Designed For: Surf, Sand, and Sun
At first glance, the Outer Banks might not seem like the most logical choice for a Bronco trim. While undeniably stunning, North Carolina’s chain of barrier islands is typically seen as a relaxing destination that promises surf, sand, and some of the East Coast’s best fishing. That said, the area hosts some unique off-road antics, with drivers testing their mettle on the beaches of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
The Bronco is uniquely well-suited to the beach lifestyle, with every trim featuring a removable roof and doors that give everyone a chance to soak up the sun and enjoy that wind-in-your-hair feeling. The Bronco Outer Banks is almost as postcard-worthy as its coastal namesake, providing no shortage of curb appeal with its LED signature headlights and body color exterior details. The trim even gains a little extra off-road appeal, thanks to a set of all-terrain tires wrapped around 18-inch aluminum wheels, but it’s the Outer Bank’s comfort-enhancing upgrades that really caught my attention this time around.
The Outer Banks isn’t quite as towering as some of the options (unless you add the Sasquatch Package with its 11.5 inches of ground clearance), but the elevated cabin could still be a bit of a hike for shorter riders. Ford engineered around this issue with integrated side steps that improve accessibility while lending the trim a sporty look. The Outer Banks also adds premium interior materials, replacing the standard-issue front seats with power-adjustable seats trimmed in leather.
Badlands
- GPS Coordinates: 43.8554° N, 102.3397° W
- Designed For: The Toughest Off-Road Terrain
Venturing into South Dakota’s Badlands National Park is akin to setting foot on an alien planet. Shaped by severe erosion, the region is known for its rocky gullies and other unique geological features, including buttes, spires, and pinnacles. As beautiful as it is unforgiving, the Badlands serves as the perfect inspiration for one of the Bronco’s most robust off-road trims.
While it might be based on the Big Bend model, the Badlands pulls out all the stops to turn the midsize SUV into a true adventure rig. Perfect for rock-crawling, dune-bashing, and other demanding activities, the off-road capability of the Bronco Badlands is only surpassed by the limited-run Stroppe Edition and the high-performance beast that is the Bronco Raptor.
From heavy-duty front and rear bumpers to underbody skid plates, rock rails, and 33-inch all-terrain tires, the Badlands is ready to roll through even the harshest terrain. The trim has even been treated to an upgraded suspension with Ford tapping the experts at Bilstein to outfit the Bronco with some of the market’s best dampers.
The Badlands includes prewired auxiliary switches that can be used to control a winch, air compressor, or light bar, and adds two additional settings to the Ford’s GOAT Mode system. Baja mode gives drivers the chance to live out their desert-racing dreams, while Rock Crawl mode is designed for tackling more technical trails. The revised design gives the Badlands 10.5 inches of ground clearance, which is lofty enough to cruise right over rocks, logs, and other common off-road obstacles.
Say Yes to Adventure In the Ford Bronco
The Bronco’s Big Bend, Outer Banks, and Badlands trims are just as picturesque as their natural namesakes, but if you really want to make the most of your next off-road excursion, Ford is here to help with two available equipment packages.
The Big Bend can be paired with a Black Diamond Package that lets it carve the slopes with steel bumpers, rock rails, bash plates, a locking rear axle, and automatic on-demand 4WD. But the best adventure gear is reserved for the Sasquatch Package.
Available on the Big Bend, Outer Banks, and Badlands, the Sasquatch Package gives drivers a big leg (or big foot) up when it comes to dealing with tough off-road conditions. The package not only includes 35-inch tires, a lifted suspension, and locking front and rear axles, but also sees the SUV gain a 4.7:1 final drive ratio that ensures you’re never short on torque.
The rest of the 2026 trim ladder is just as compelling as the three options we’ve touched on so far. The Heritage Edition adds retro styling to honor the original Bronco, while the Stroppe Edition is a true desert-racing icon. The Bronco Raptor is as tough as they come in the off-road category, and looks ready for the Baja 1000 with its 37-inch all-terrain tires, wide fender flares, and FOX shocks.
No matter which trim you choose, you’ll always feel ready to tackle the road when you’re behind the wheel of the Bronco. The Bronco’s nature-inspired trims are a unique nod to some of America’s most beloved outdoor locations. Still, the 2026 Bronco is here to remind us that it’s the journey, not the destination, that really deserves our attention.
