To the Batmobile: The BE 6 Batman Edition Pays Tribute to a Comic Legend

Months after its initial reveal, people are still buzzing about the Mahindra BE 6 Batman Edition, an all-electric SUV with a superhero twist. Trumpeted as the “first commercially available Batman-inspired SUV,” it pays homage to the Caped Crusader and his famous Batmobile. By reimagining the Batmobile as a compact EV, this vehicle offers a unique real-world take on the iconic fictional machine.

But what’s special about the BE 6 Batman Edition? What about the vehicle it’s based on? Does it mean anything for EVs and SUVs going forward? And perhaps most importantly to U.S. readers, can they get their hands on this limited-edition SUV? I have the answers to those questions and more, beginning with a quick primer on the company that’s bringing Batman SUVs to the public.

Why Mahindra Is a Big Deal

Although Mahindra (officially Mahindra & Mahindra) may not be well-known in the U.S., this Indian automaker has a history dating to 1945—and a deep connection to a famous American SUV nameplate. Originally created for steel trading, things took a quick turn two years later, when Mahindra was licensed by Willys as the official Jeep manufacturer for the Indian market. From what I could find, that license is still valid today, having carried over through every subsequent Jeep ownership group.

Mahindra went on to develop its own extensive lineup of SUVs and trucks while also acquiring the REVA Electric Car Company, multiple motorcycle makers, tractor companies, and even agricultural machinery. It also had a brief joint venture with Renault, and the French automaker still supplies Mahindra with key components.

The automotive conglomerate entered the U.S. market in 2017 with the opening of a Detroit manufacturing plant, which produces the Roxor, a 4×4 UTV. However, the Roxor immediately faced a lawsuit from Stellantis for allegedly resembling the Jeep CJ5 too closely. A district court ruled against Stellantis in 2023.

What Is the Mahindra BE 6?

Like many automakers, Mahindra saw the EV trend and jumped in headfirst over the last decade-plus. It’s been part of the FIA Formula E Series since the first season, and Mahindra unveiled its first commercial EV, the XUV400, in 2023. This compact crossover was an electrified version of the existing XUV300. As such, it had a more traditional aesthetic with modern performance underneath.

The BE 6, though, represented Mahindra’s true plunge into an EV future. The coupe crossover debuted in 2024 alongside the XEV 9e as the company’s first independent platform EVs. Its three-in-one electric powertrain produces up to 286 hp, and it comes with all the advanced technology EV fans expect, including Level 2+ advanced driver assistance, ultra-fast charging, automatic parking, and a premium 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. Just as importantly, it looks like a car of the future, with bold curves and lines that remind me a bit of the Tesla Cybertruck.

Interestingly, the BE 6 also ended up in a legal kerfuffle — though not with Tesla. Mahindra planned to call the vehicle the BE 6, but in December 2024, the airline IndiGo filed a trademark dispute because 6E is its official IATA code, forcing a name change.

What’s Different About the BE 6 Batman Edition?

All that brings me to the Batman Edition, which was officially revealed on August 14, 2025. More than an appearance package, it seeks to immerse drivers in the world of Batman, offering something that feels cinematic and helps drivers connect with their favorite superhero. Specifically, the BE 6 Batman Edition takes its cues from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy of the mid-2000s and early 2010s.

Everywhere you look, this official collaboration pays tribute to the Defender of Gotham. The exterior features large alloy wheels with an aggressive five-spoke pattern, a suspension and brakes painted in alchemy gold, and a satin black body color with a plethora of Batman emblems and badges. There’s even a large Batman decal on the front doors and carpet lamps that project the Bat logo like the movie skylights.

The theme continues inside the BE 6 Batman Edition with alchemy gold accenting and detailing on the upholstery, steering wheel, parking brake, screen controller, and key fob. The seats and instrument panel are covered in suede and charcoal leather, and there are even more Batman graphics. The finishing touches are the Batmobile-inspired engine sounds and a numbered Batman Edition gold plaque above the stop-start button.

All in all, it’s a fitting embodiment of Batman, bringing his crime-chasing splendor to a compact EV. And considering everything, the BE 6 Batman Edition was surprisingly affordable. Its listed price of 2,779,000 Indian rupees converts to just over $31,000 as of this writing. (The regular starting price on the BE 6 is 1,890,000 rupees, or about $21,100).

Will the Mahindra BE 6 Batman Edition Be Available in the U.S.?

Unfortunately, the short answer is no, for multiple reasons. Mahindra said from the beginning that it would only offer the BE 6 Batman Edition to Indian buyers. This makes sense as Mahindra currently doesn’t offer any road-legal vehicles for U.S. customers, but it’s still a shame for all the Batman fans in his home country.

Even if they were offering it in the U.S., though, you probably wouldn’t have gotten one, which is why I said “was” in the previous section. Mahindra originally planned to produce only 300 BE 6 Batman Edition vehicles, but due to popular demand, they increased the order to 999 units. Even then, the BE 6 Batman Edition sold out in just 2 minutes and 15 seconds after pre-orders opened! Deliveries began on September 20, 2025—aka International Batman Day.

What About the BE 6 Formula E Edition?

Interestingly, though, the Batman Edition isn’t the only way Mahindra has elevated the normally entry-level compact SUV, and I think it’s something worth touching on. On November 26, 2025, Mahandra announced the BE 6 Formula E Edition, another super take on EVs where the theme is the world’s highest level of all-electric motorsports.

Like the Batman Edition, the Formula E Edition seeks to immerse the pilot in an exciting new world. The exterior emphasizes a track-ready attitude with its revised spoiler, aero flares, skid plates, bright accents, and branded graphics. The cabin is race-ready with a Firestorm Orange color theme; FIA seat belts; and Formula E engine sounds, startup animation, and a start-stop flap.

Mahindra will start taking orders of the Formula E Edition on January 14, 2026, with the first deliveries on Valentine’s Day. Pricing starts at 2,369,000 rupees, converting to just over $26,400. The first 999 buyers receive a bonus package that includes a day at the Mahindra test track, a collector’s box of memorabilia, and having their name on the Mahindra car at the London E-Prix.

What Does All This Mean for the Future of Electric SUVs?

From where I’m sitting, even with its limited sales numbers, these vehicles have done a lot to raise Mahindra’s profile. Two days after the Formula E Edition announcement, Mahindra reported it had sold 30,000 EVs in the previous seven months. A big chunk of this number is the sales of the BE 6 Batman Edition. I can honestly say I’d never heard of Mahindra before it announced the Batman Edition, so the vehicle has done its job here, too.

My hope is that the Batman Edition is just the beginning of further superhero-themed cars and other collaborations. There are tons of possibilities, and if the rights can be sorted out, it’s a great opportunity to bring this immersive, fan-based driving experience to the masses. And as the list prices show, a unique vehicle appearance package and theme—whether a superhero or racing series—doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

A car based on the Green Hornet Black Beauty? What about the X-Men Blackbird or the Fantasticar? It should all be on the table. Such themes would be a great way to spice up the vehicle market and perhaps reinvigorate EV interest.
