The INEOS Grenadier: What Makes This Refreshingly Retro 4×4 So Capable?

Every so often, a new automotive brand emerges that captures the imagination and interest of the car-buying public, gaining attention due to unique aesthetics, unmatched performance, or state-of-the-art technology that immediately distinguishes it from the crowd. At present, the INEOS Grenadier is precisely such a vehicle. For the upstart all-terrain-capable INEOS Grenadier, all three descriptors apply. From its retro, boxy aesthetic to its advanced off-road design and engineering, the INEOS Grenadier is a refreshing anomaly in a field of increasingly tech-driven 4×4 vehicles.

What is the INEOS Grenadier, and how has the fledgling brand taken the all-terrain SUV market by storm? I found myself asking those same questions after first seeing the unfamiliar name listed in promotional pamphlets and internet banner ads. As I got to know the brand, I began to see it not as just another clunky, safari-chic SUV, but rather a refreshingly analog throwback to a simpler time, when all-terrain vehicles spent more time in the wilderness than in the suburbs.

Though built to toe the line between the rugged and the refined, there’s no mistaking the credentials and intentions of every INEOS Grenadier for sale in the North American market. They’re built for maximum capability, with rustic charm that harkens back to an era when a weekend adventurer could answer the call of the wilderness in a dependable off-road vehicle without hesitation.

A Brief History of the INEOS Grenadier

A newcomer in the field of seasoned off-road SUV manufacturers, INEOS Automotive began as many great stories of ingenuity and innovation do. In 2017, in a London pub known as The Grenadier, Sir Jim Ratcliffe developed a vision, hatching the dream of creating an old-school, throwback 4×4 vehicle that dispensed with many of the modern trappings of contemporary SUVs in favor of a more analog approach to design. He saw a gap in the market for a stripped-down, purpose-engineered 4×4 built for off-road enthusiasts, by off-road enthusiasts. The seed of the INEOS Grenadier was planted, and the growth of the concept was immediate.

Design work on what would become the INEOS Grenadier began in earnest in 2018, with a 200-engineer-strong design team convening to accomplish a singular purpose: to design the next great off-road vehicle by focusing on lessons learned from the past while selectively embracing modern technology.

By December 2019, the concept was well-developed, and engineering of the production vehicle began. Images of the vehicle entered the public eye in 2020, and production began at a repurposed automotive factory in Hambach, France, in December of that year. Reservations for the release of the INEOS Grenadier station wagon were accepted beginning in 2021, and the first customer orders were fulfilled in 2023. The INEOS Grenadier was fully introduced to the American public for the 2024 model year.

Maximum Off-Road Capabilities

Whether you’ve read the model brochures or you’ve seen an INEOS Grenadier in person, it’s not hard to understand that the vehicle was built with a singular purpose in mind. It’s built to conquer obstacles in the wild while retaining the precision engineering and refinement needed to ensure a smooth, pleasant ride in more civilized circumstances. The undisputed heartbeat of the vehicle’s design is its off-road performance.

The INEOS Grenadier incorporates features that make it a beast beyond the end of the pavement. For example, it’s built on a strong foundation, featuring a fully boxed ladder-frame chassis that provides a solid platform capable of withstanding the rigors of all-terrain travel. INEOS didn’t stop there, however. The frame offers maximum corrosion resistance thanks to its full E-coat treatment, with cavity wax inside and powder coating outside. That shows a remarkable understanding of the ways that functional 4×4 vehicle performance can be eroded over time, and it demonstrates a commitment to making the INEOS Grenadier’s undercarriage as bulletproof as possible.

Other off-road-savvy features found in the INEOS Grenadier include a true 4×4 drivetrain with a Tremec transfer case, ensuring maximum traction regardless of the terrain. Carraro solid axles also form the foundation of the INEOS Grenadier line, featuring a 4.1:1 differential ratio that maximizes traction and virtually eliminates slippage. The design incorporates three Eaton locking differentials to keep moving on the slipperiest surfaces. A special overhead toggle panel allows drivers to easily activate the front and rear locks as needed.

Suspension design is a key consideration in an off-road-capable vehicle, and the INEOS Grenadier utilizes low-maintenance coil springs manufactured by Eibach, a company renowned for its suspension components. The coil springs give the INEOS Grenadier an amazing nine degrees of articulation for the front axle and 12 degrees of rear axle articulation. Offering 23 inches of suspension travel, the springs ensure that all four wheels remain in contact with the terrain at all times, delivering power consistently on even the roughest terrain.

Refreshingly Analog Design

While the right features can amplify the off-road performance of a vehicle, the INEOS Grenadier also incorporates a design that embraces the boxy, squared-off aesthetic historically seen in the most rugged adventure machines. While the analog aesthetic carries a noted throwback mystique, it also has a purely functional purpose of improving off-road performance.

For example, the INEOS Grenadier has its four wheels positioned as close to the corners as possible. While that may seem like a minor design choice, it magnifies the terrain-conquering capabilities of the vehicle by creating the shortest possible overhangs on the front and rear of the vehicle. That results in better approach and departure angles that keep the INEOS Grenadier from hitting obstacles. It also enjoys features like a high-position air intake and waterproofed underbody electronics, which allow it to ford streams with ease.

Terrain-Conquering Powertrain

At the heart of the INEOS Grenadier’s potent performance is its powertrain. Combined with the permanent 4×4 and other off-road-capable features, the turbocharged BMW 3.0L I-6 engine under the hood provides the power needed to conquer obstacles off the pavement and function efficiently on paved roads. The turbocharged powerplant churns out 282 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, giving it plenty of punch on well-traveled roads as well as beyond the tarmac’s end.

The engine is tuned for reliable performance, and it provides enough torque to pull up to 7,716 lbs. Having the power to chase adventure wherever it leads is a key benefit of the INEOS Grenadier’s powertrain, and the engine is combined with an advanced ZF eight-speed automatic transmission that provides smooth shifting performance, whether you’re climbing terrain or tackling chores around town.

INEOS Grenadier: The Future of Upscale Off-Road Prowess

For off-road enthusiasts who remember the all-terrain packmule SUVs that roamed the world’s savannas and badlands in decades past, the INEOS Grenadier provides a refreshing reminder of what a true off-road vehicle should be. Its retro style is certain to excite fans of old-school all-terrain vehicles, and it provides something of an aesthetic throwback to a time when SUVs were built for a purpose.

It’s not that the INEOS Grenadier totally eschews modern technology, as the well-appointed interior is luxurious and offers a comfortable ride. But those trappings of civilized life aren’t the primary focus of the vehicle’s design. At its heart, the INEOS Grenadier is built to conquer obstacles and extend the journey well beyond the road’s end.
