The History of the Wagoneer

Many hidden treasures and stories lay in the roots of the Wagoneer. Our story started in the ’60s when Kaiser Jeep created a new line of SUVs called the Wagoneer for their Jeep brand. No one knew at the time that this would be such a revolutionary idea and would be the start of a legacy. In 1963, the Wagoneer was introduced to the world. With a powerful engine and room for up to eight passengers, this SUV is a true hidden treasure. It’s safe to say that the Wagoneer has been an iconic vehicle since its introduction nearly 50 years ago.

In the beginning, the Wagoneer was given an inline-six engine and four-wheel drive, allowing off-road enthusiasts everywhere to have a chance at reaching their destination no matter the obstacle. In 1966 the Super Wagoneer with a V8 engine became an option for buyers who wanted more power. As years went by, ever more powerful engines were made available, eventually ending with a 6.6L V8 in the late 1970s.

The Wagoneer was also one of the first SUVs to offer individual front seats rather than bench seating. The car was even designed with luxury in mind; it featured power steering and power brakes which was rare at this time for an SUV. This made the vehicle very easy to drive and encouraged people who were new to SUVs to give this brand a chance.

The Wagoneer made its name as one of the only SUVs available with air conditioning and power windows. The exterior design of the vehicle was also updated over time to add even more elegance and luxury to the already luxurious SUV. Though other SUVs such as Range Rover were able to catch up in features over time, Wagoneer continued to offer high-end features that most SUVs did not offer at the time. This was one of the first SUVs to be able to comfortably fit eight passengers and truly made it a family SUV.

In 1978 a new level of luxury was added to the Wagoneer with the new Limited trim. This brand new model had such features as an AM/FM radio, disc brakes, power door locks, 15-inch aluminum wheels, premium leather seats, and cruise control. The Wagoneer Limited also sported the wooden side trim that has become an unforgettable feature of the model.

In 1984, the Wagoneer was renamed the Grand Wagoneer to free up its original name for another model. Despite the age of the vehicle, it remained a top pick in the luxury SUV segment and compared favorably with its younger competition. When Chrysler bought the Jeep brand in 1987, it kept the Wagoneer in production virtually unchanged. When the final Wagoneer eventually rolled off the line in 1991, it was nearly indistinguishable from the original vehicle that first hit the roads almost three decades before.

Thirty years later, the Wagoneer continues to hold a special place in the heart of automotive enthusiasts. It may be long discontinued, but these classic cars still exist at many dealerships across the country because people just love this classic American SUV! However, if you thought that this iconic vehicle was dead and gone just because it was officially retired, you’d be wrong. The newest treasure to be found at your local Wagoneer dealership is a brand spanking new Wagoneer and its sister car, the Grand Wagoneer. These brand new models are set to debut in 2021.
