The Most Iconic Mercedes-Benz Models of the 21st Century

You’re probably aware that Mercedes-Benz is one of those brands that exudes top-level luxury. I mean, there aren’t too many luxury automakers out there with such an esteemed reputation, and when it comes to some of its most famous models, I’m sure you’ve heard of them. Maybach, G-Wagon, AMG…the list goes on. Even if you didn’t know that these names were associated with Mercedes-Benz, you’ve likely heard of them. Maybe you’ve noticed a used Mercedes-Benz for sale at a dealership near you, and you’re wondering whether or not it’s one of the most wow-worthy models the German brand has ever produced. Well, if you’re curious about some of the coolest Mercedes models from the 21st century, here’s my list of legends.

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren

Anything with the name McLaren attached to it automatically grabs the attention of drivers, especially the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, which was produced from 2004 until 2010. Not only is this sports car extremely athletic and eye-catching, but its roots stem from Formula 1 racing. This collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and McLaren resulted in a supercar that wasn’t just fit for the track, but the highway also, making even weekend cruises more invigorating than ever. The SLR McLaren looks like a racecar, which instantly makes it stand out in a crowd. It performs like one too, with models from its first year in the States equipped with a supercharged 5.5L V8 engine that makes 617 hp.

Just how fast can this supercar catapult you from 0-60 mph? It happens in a cool 3.6 seconds, which is why it’s so intriguing to today’s drivers, myself included. Not only does it look ultra-sleek, with a low stance and a deployable rear spoiler, but its excellent engineering is something that’s truly admirable. The SLR McLaren exhibits outstanding performance and aerodynamics, making it a true superstar in the supercar arena. If you’re a Mercedes-Benz fan, you probably know the SLR McLaren well, and if you see one sail past you on the streets, don’t try to keep up––it’s pretty much impossible.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

Another name that piques drivers’ interest is AMG, and when it comes to cars that make you do a double take, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is it. It was only produced for a short time period, from 2010 until 2015, which makes it a bit of an enigma and also highly desirable for many Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts. The SLS AMG was the model that caused more people to take Mercedes-Benz seriously in the supercar arena, allowing the brand to compete more on a level playing field with competitors like Porsche, Ferrari, and Lamborghini. Perhaps what makes this car so cool is its gullwing doors, which open up instead of out, creating a winged bird appearance that intensifies its performance-oriented persona.

Chrome elements accentuate its exterior, not only heightening its designer appeal but also its functionality. It’s not the fastest Mercedes ever built, but it sure is cool to look at, which is why it has a spot on my list. It’s armed with a 6.2L V8, which surges forward with 583 horses at the helm, which is plenty exhilarating for most drivers. It’s also perfectly balanced with its engine behind the front wheels for a one-of-a-kind ride quality. This model will surely turn heads if you happen to come across one in a parking lot as its doors loom over you and cast a shadow that’s filled with confidence.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class

I’m sure you’ve heard enough pop music to know that the G-Wagon is a highly popular car to talk about, and for good reason—it’s one cool-looking SUV. It has remained virtually unchanged since it made its debut back in the 1970s, giving off vintage vibes that make it an instant hit for those looking to stand out in a crowd. The G-Wagon showcases a boxy, utilitarian stance that looks different than most other midsize SUVs, and this stems from its military origins. This rugged and ready-for-anything SUV is perfectly paired with luxury touches, and I think that’s what makes it so iconic. There’s really nothing quite like it, making it a true status symbol, and when you own one of these models, people can’t help but be impressed.

The G-Wagon is still an obvious favorite in Mercedes-Benz’s inventory, known for its high-grade luxury appointments and do-anything attitude, especially when the ground beneath its tires becomes rough. It’s not the most economically priced SUV, but the chances are that price isn’t an issue if you’re looking to bring one home. If you want to look cool while you head to the farmer’s market or the country club, the G-Wagon will ensure this.

Mercedes-Maybach S-Class

It’s sleek, it’s stylish, and it’s got a reputation for utter lavishness. There are luxury sedans, and then there’s the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, which is in a league of its own. Introduced in 2015, the Maybach version of the already opulent S-Class exhibits old-money vibes with its classic stare and opulent appointments throughout its posh cabin space. It’s adorned with high-quality leather upholstery, ambient lighting, heated seats in both rows, and an air purification system to make for a cabin experience that you most certainly won’t find elsewhere. What makes this model even more captivating is the fact that it’s so smooth and agile on the road, with a selection of powertrains that enhance the drive in ways that other luxury brands can’t.

Newer models even include temperature-adjustable cup holders to keep your champagne bubbly and your cappuccino toasty. Oh, and speaking of champagne, you’ll have no problem keeping it cold in an onboard refrigerator, and of course, serving it will be no problem either, with exclusive Maybach-branded champagne flutes. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class goes beyond luxury. It’s so classy that it belongs in a James Bond film––and Hollywood agrees, given that the S-Class has appeared in both Skyfall and Spectre!

Mercedes-AMG E63

The last model on my “Coolest Mercedes Models” list is more of an everyday traveler. The Mercedes-AMG E63 is the highest-performance version of the midsize E-Class, but it is still a more practical option that everyday drivers can actually envision themselves inside. Introduced in 2007 with a 6.3L naturally-aspirated V8 engine, it’s a thrilling sedan that offers the right amount of power, performance, and luxury, which is why so many daily drivers are attracted to it. Did I mention that it’s also thrilling? It takes those everyday trips to the store to pick up a gallon of milk to a whole new level of excitement. The third generation of the E63, which was introduced in 2018, upgraded to a twin-turbocharged 4.0L V8 powertrain making an astounding 603 hp. It’s a bit more than you probably need when you’re heading into the office on a Monday, but hey—who said the daily commute had to be boring?

What’s Your Favorite?

That’s a wrap—the coolest Mercedes-Benz models of the 21st century. Of course, these are just a few of my favorites. The brand is recognized for its cutting-edge engineering and top-of-the-line models, which means that there are plenty of other models out there that have captured the attention of today’s drivers. Whether it’s the iconic design of the G-Wagon, the sheer performance of the SLR McLaren, the supercar vibes that the SLS AMG gives off, or the posh features you’ll find in the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, one thing is certain—nothing beats a ‘Benz. I’m sure the automaker has quite a few tricks up its sleeve that we’ll see in the upcoming years, on top of modern marvels like the Mercedes-AMG ONE that are just waiting to earn a spot on this list.
