The Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion is a Vision of the Future

Every year, automakers come out with concept cars, prototypes of future ideas that cause visitors to auto shows worldwide to ooh and aah over crazy designs, wild new features, and innovative systems. However, most of these concept cars remain just that, a pipe dream of what the future of the automobile might hold that usually just end up in some wealthy celebrity’s personal collection. I’m sure many critics felt this way when Volkswagen first debuted the Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion in 2019. They took one look at the otherworldly design with its clean lines and thought it was another designer’s far-fetched ideas about what a fully electric crossover vehicle should look like but that it would never arrive at an electric car dealer near you. It would just join so many other concept cars over the past fifty years that became only so many visions of the future passed.

Volkswagen is about to prove these naysayers wrong when it begins manufacturing and distributing the ID. Space Vizzion here in the United States sometime in 2022. Unlike other concept cars, the Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion will be coming right off the drawing board and straight into showrooms across America sooner than we think. This will give us all a wonderful vision of the future right now and a great electric vehicle to drive today.

ID. Space Vizzion Inspiring Interest

The ID. Space Vizzion is the latest vehicle to come out of Volkswagen’s MEB platform. MEB stands for Modularer E-Antriebs-Baukasten, which translates into English as Modular Electric-Drive Toolkit. The idea is to give Volkswagen a competitive advantage by making it more efficient and less expensive to manufacture electric vehicles (EVs) like the Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion. The company’s goal is to develop 27 new EVs over the next few years, positioning Volkswagen as one of the leaders in the EV business. To date, Volkswagen has developed 7 EVs in the MEB platform: ID., ID. CROZZ, ID. BUZZ, ID. BUGGY, ID. ROOMZZ, and ID.4.

It starts with an emphasis on reliability. As designed, the I.D. Space Vizzion will have a range of up to 300 miles on one full charge of its 82.0-kWh lithium-ion battery. This battery will be located under the passenger compartment between the front and rear axles. Volkswagen has made charging the ID. Space Vizzion easy since it has the capability of 150-kWh fast charging. As a result, you can easily recharge your ID. Space Vizzion at fast-charging stations around the USA.

The Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion’s battery powers a rear motor that can produce up to 275 horsepower. There is an additional 101 horsepower electric motor in the front axle that can boost it to 335 horsepower on the vehicle, making the ID. Space Vizzion all-wheel drive capable for improved traction.

The engineers at Volkswagen have given the ID. Space Vizzion smooth and clean lines to make it extremely aerodynamic. It also has a sleek appearance that is unlike any other vehicle on the road today, most resembling a crossover SUV-type vehicle with its rear hatchback.

Volkswagen has designed the ID. Space Vizzion to be as efficient as possible, replacing door handles with touch-sensitive haptic pads that react to the driver while removing air resistance. The same goes for the 22-inch wheels that have been designed to reduce airflow disruption with five quadrant tire rims that channel the air around the wheels. Finally, the vehicle’s design permits increased airflow through the grilled front end and roof. This will reduce vehicle drag significantly.

ID. Space Vizzion Featuring Fun

From the moment you look at the Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion, you can see that the designers envisioned drivers like you having fun with this car. It starts with a light-up VW logo that replaces the standard dull badges we see on practically every car. This is framed on both sides by white LED light strips, accenting the vehicle’s front end. The ID. Space Vizzion seems to be saying “here I am” to whoever might be out there on the road with you. The animated exterior LED lighting comes on automatically when the driver approaches, communicating with you in ways never seen before on any vehicle. The ID. Space Vizzion truly talks to you!

The fun continues with a 15.6-inch center infotainment screen ergonomically positioned between the driver and front seat passenger. This gives the Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion one of the largest touchscreens on any car available today. It also makes it easier for your passenger to choose what music you’d like to listen to on the vehicle’s sound system or for you to follow along when using a navigational app on the touchscreen.

The ID. Space Vizzion even takes the fun outside the vehicle when you leave and need to get somewhere that the vehicle can’t go. The roomy 20.7-inch luggage compartment opens to reveal two electric skateboards so you and a lucky passenger can sidewalk surf to your destination after safely parking your Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion.

ID. Space Vizzion Generates Excitement

Most folks probably look at EVs from a purely utilitarian standpoint. They are great because they are fuel-efficient and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, most people don’t think of EVs as exciting. This will change when they get behind the wheel of a Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion. That’s because this vehicle’s powerful modular electric drive matrix can get it to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in a flat 5.0 seconds. That is the kind of acceleration most folks associate with sports cars, not EVs.

The ID. Space Vizzion will also be exciting to drive as the same attention to ergonomics that went into the placement of the 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen has also guided the design of the driver cockpit. The left steering column switch will control the vehicle’s windshield wipers, while the right switch will control the automatic transmission on the ID. Space Vizzion. It is this attention to space that will also set the ID. Space Vizzion apart from other EVs.

ID. Space Vizzion Innovatively New

There are so many innovative and novel features on the Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion that it is hard to list all of them. This EV crossover seats up to four passengers in a roomy, limousine-style arrangement that will not have your rear-seat passengers fighting over shoulder and hip room. The materials used in the interior are as sustainable as you can get. It is a faux leather that Volkswagen has dubbed AppleSkin, which is made from the byproduct waste leftover from making apple juice. This addresses the paradox of so many other EVs that use real animal skin, wood, and other non-sustainable materials in their interiors. Unlike the other EV automakers, Volkswagen is not hypocritical in designing the MEB platform to be as environmentally friendly as possible. I’ll gladly toast Volkswagen with a glass of sparkling apple cider!

One of the other features that is truly new is the replacement of the standard display of gauges and dials with an augmented reality head-up display. Not only will this be cool to look at, but it will also be a major functional improvement. This feature will improve your ability to process vital vehicle information in real time while also making it easier to view without taking your eyes off the road. Hopefully, Volkswagen will export this technology to other models in its lineup.
