Sharp as a Razor: The 2024 Ford Edge Brings High Performance to the Crossover Class

What are some of the main attributes that immediately come to mind when you think of the crossover SUV? You might think of a vehicle that’s tailored for the average consumer. You might think of features that are geared towards safety, storage, and the peace of mind that today’s modern family might be looking to take advantage of in their travels. There are two attributes that you might not think of immediately: fast acceleration, and performance geared towards those who enjoy some kick in their commuting. The fact of the matter is these attributes not only exist, but they’re what makes the 2024 Ford Edge stand out among the imitators and competitors that claim their superiority. While the crossover SUV is often praised for its practicality, the Ford Edge manages to inject some bonafide excitement into the vehicle. Strap yourselves in and get ready to put the pedal to the metal, because we’re taking a ride on the wilder side of things.

The Power of a Memorable First Impression

We often look for what we drive to be an extension of our personality. There’s no denying that we want to drive something that’s pleasing to the eye and caters to our love of style and aesthetics. One good thing about the SUV becoming the ideal method of family-oriented transportation is that we no longer have to worry about being seen in either a station wagon or minivan. The 2024 Ford Edge might have the appearance of an SUV, but it also carries with it a fair amount of attitude and personality that will certainly carry favor with drivers. Sitting on a set of 18-inch wheels (a 21-inch set is available and standard on the performance-oriented ST trim), the front end makes a statement wherever it goes, and its slightly lifted rear end is certainly pleasing to the eye. Just because you drive something practical doesn’t mean you have to skimp on style and sophistication.

Harnessing High Performance

Now that we’ve firmly established that the Ford Edge looks like a serious contender for the driver who wants just a little bit more, it’s time to see if it can back up its statements. The Ford Edge certainly walks the walk and talks the talk. The Edge has two available powertrains, and both of them certainly deliver in the performance factor. The base offering takes the form of a 2.0L turbocharged I-4 that propels the Edge forward with the benefit of 250 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, which is certainly quite a bit more than many of the economical crossovers that currently dominate the marketplace. This engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive for optimum performance.

For those who crave even more, look no further than the ST trim. The ST, which also has specialized training classes that Ford holds for drivers who are looking to improve upon their driving techniques, is gifted with a twin-turbocharged 2.7L V6. Boasting 335 horsepower and the capability to generate 380 lb-ft of torque through a seven-speed automatic transmission, this is what happens when the craftsmanship is applied to the crossover. The optional ST Performance Brake Package takes it up yet another notch by adding larger brake rotors, performance brake pads, red calipers, and 21-inch wheels wrapped in performance tires to clear them, as well as vented brake shields and a brushless radiator fan to keep things cool when the action heats up.

As hot hatches, including Ford’s own Fiesta ST, Focus ST, and Focus RS, have departed the North American market, they’ve left a gap behind for drivers who need a practical car but still want the performance of a sports car. Luxury brands such as Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes have been offering hopped-up versions of their SUVs for years, but only recently have non-luxury brands such as Volkswagen and Mazda began placing more emphasis on performance-oriented SUVs. The Edge ST lives up to the expectations set by its smaller hatchback predecessors. It offers drivers a much more exciting option, which is what the ST is all about.

A Futuristic Interior for the Modern Driver

Now that we’ve explored the Ford Edge’s attributes in exterior design and performance from two available powertrains, it’s time to pop open that driver’s door and get behind the wheel. You’ll be impressed with all of the wonderful items that are at your immediate disposal.

Similar to many other vehicle designs that populate the marketplace, the interior of the Ford Edge is prominently anchored by its infotainment screen. In an age where many manufacturers are either trying to mimic Tesla by placing the screen on top of the dash, or still making the standard screen size no larger than seven or eight inches, the Edge separates itself from this practice. A vertical screen that expands to a foot in vertical length is perfectly positioned in close proximity to the steering column. This setup is standard on all trims across the board, proving Ford’s willingness to make it more accessible to the average consumer. The setup of the interior walks the edge (pun fully intended) between practicality and sophistication. The items in the cabin are close enough to provide easy access, but also have just enough space to create a spacious and relaxing experience when you’re behind the wheel.

Like so many other vehicles that Ford manufactures, the interior is customizable in the various forms of entertainment that are available to you. Even the base trim has plenty of standard features to offer. These include a six-speaker stereo system with enhanced voice recognition technology, compliments of SYNC 4A, which is Ford’s comprehensive software that receives over-the-air updates to ensure that you’re always benefitting from the latest and greatest technological upgrades. Dual-zone climate control is also standard.

If you’re someone who wants to maximize your entertainment options during your travels, Ford makes it possible to do so. Some of the more advanced available offerings include a high-end stereo system from the audio experts at Bang & Olufsen. This system features an additional subwoofer and a 780-watt amplifier for the highest quality of sound. There are also additional features that can provide additional oversight during your travels, such as adaptive cruise control and a blind spot information system. Of course, the Edge has all of the other attributes that many look for in the purchase of a capable crossover, such as a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 lbs and a maximum of 73.4 available cubic feet of storage space with the back seats folded down.

Giving a New Meaning to “Life on the Edge”

In the past, when someone said they were living on the edge, it was thought of as a euphemism for chaos and turmoil. The 2024 Ford Edge is a crossover that separates itself from this meaning, as well as the standard offerings that we’re used to experiencing. With two unique powertrains, one of which places high-octane performance on the same level with practicality and a host of advanced offerings that enhance the driving experience, Ford once again proves its ability to keep its finger on the pulse of what consumers want and need. The repurposed focus from cars to their fleet of trucks and SUVs might have made some skeptical, but if the future is anything like we’ve seen with the Ford Edge, we’d say that it has never looked brighter.
