History of the Jeep Wrangler

For a moment, stepping back to the inception of such a beloved vehicle, The wrangler is a product with a long history whose origins trail back to 1945 with Jeep CJ models post World War II. With years of research and development under their belt, they officially unveiled the Jeep Wrangler YJ in 1986, which put Jeep in the spotlight for being a more suitable ride than it’s previous models. They only improved upon it from there following critical receptions, including anti-lock brakes and an overall more powerful engine, including switching over to an automatic transmission circa 1994.

Introducing the new generation of wranglers in 1996, the Wrangler TJ offered up some improvements such as a better frame and an overall smoother ride but still utilized the same engine that was found in the first generation Wrangler YJ. When they unveiled the Wrangler JK around 2006-2007 they introduced the 4-door variant and improved upon safety features and introduced new stylistic designs while still retaining its original options.

Once 2018 rolled around, Jeep unveiled the Wrangler JL and gave the Wrangler a modern view on things, including the implementation of bluetooth and added even more safety features that have become staples in modern-day vehicles such as parking sensors and backup cameras. The Wrangler JL is simply the most customizable and enjoyable Wrangler to ever to be released, and the 2020 Jeep Wrangler is an exciting part of this generation.

The Jeep Wrangler is not shy when it comes to customization, and it couldn’t be more evident through the sheer amount of trims and add-ons you may choose. Each trim comes standard with a 3.6L V6 engine, producing 285 hp with 260 lb-ft of torque, which achieves up to 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

This engine has ESS technology built-in for fuel-saving measures. ESS stands for engine start-stop technology, which means when your car comes to a complete stop such as when you approach a stop sign or red light, your engine’s fuel flow will be cut, and your engine turns off and instantly turns back on seamlessly when you start accelerating.

Each trim also includes features such as a ParkView rear backup camera presented on a Uconnect display, which may be Uconnect 3 or 4 depending on the trim you choose, as well as a variation of screen sizes including 5, 7, and 8.4 inches. Every trim except the basic Sport includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and most trims will be treated to cloth low-back bucket seats with the Rubicon, including a Premium variant.

Your choice of trims starts with whether or not you’re interested in a 2-door or 4-door Wrangler. The 2-door trims include the Sport, Sport S, Black and Tan, Willys, Freedom, and Rubicon. All of these trims are also featured with their 4-door counterparts. The trims exclusive to the 4-door are the Sport Altitude, Sahara, and the Sahara Altitude.

The 2-door Sport starts at $28,295 while the 4-door variant costs $31,990. Each variation of Sport trims includes a Uconnect 3 system on a 5-inch display as well as a Command-Trac part-time 4WD System. The Sport S starts at $31,690 with 2-doors and $34,995 for the 4-door variant, and it introduces the leather-wrapped steering wheel as well as power front windows with 1-touch down found on the Sport Altitude which only comes in a 4-door variant. The Sport Altitude starts at $36,690 and comes equipped with a heavy-duty suspension with gas shocks not found on the base Sport or the Sport S as well as a black 3-piece hard top.

The Black and Tan is the next trim on offer, and its 2-door option starts at $33,190 while 4-door costs $36,690. The Black and Tan upgrades your Uconnect system to a Uconnect 4 shown on a 7-inch display. Purchasing the Black and Tan will grant you SiriusXM radio with a 1-year subscription also found on each trim beyond this. The exterior of your car will feature a premium soft-top to go along with the aesthetic of your vehicle.

The next trims to select from are Willys, which starts at $33,990 for the 2-door and $37,490 for the 4-door and Freedom costs $34,190 4-door and $37,690 for the 2-door. Freedom comes equipped with all-terrain tires and a premium black soft-top. The Sahara and Sahara Altitude are the other two trims that are exclusively limited to 4-seats and cost $38,840 and $41,940, respectively.

These two trims come with the aforementioned heavy-duty suspension with gas shocks found on the Sport Altitude and upgrade the Uconnect System to a 7-inch display. They also introduce the option to upgrade this even further to a massive 8.4-inch Uconnect 4C NAV display, which remains optional through the Sahara Altitude and the Rubicon. The Sahara Altitude comes standard with a stylish leather-wrapped shift knob while it remains optional on the Sahara and Rubicon as well.

The Rubicon is the last trim on the list and starts at $38,295 for the 2-door model and $41,990 for the 4-door. The Rubicon has some outstanding features not found on the previously mentioned trims, such as a performance style suspension and a 4:1 rock-trac heavy-duty part-time 4WD System. Only found in the Rubicon are premium cloth low-back bucket seats with optional leather-trimmed bucket seats should you desire.
