If you have been anticipating the debut of the 2022 Chevy Colorado, then your long wait is over. All of the details you have been anxious to learn about the 2022 model are ready to be revealed. While everything you know and love about this midsize truck remains the same, there are some new off-road options that will give you more choice when designing your dream truck.
What’s New for the 2022 Colorado?
The 2022 Chevy Colorado has not changed drastically from the 2021 model. Colorado does not have as many new safety features and technological advancements as you hear about in many of the 2022 trucks. Colorado will remain a more basic truck with a lower price tag. Unfortunately, something has to be traded for something to be gained, and the trade-off for the lower price tag is the high-tech features and gadgets that so many vehicles have.
What you will see in the 2022 model is a new Trail Boss package for the LT and Z71 trims. The Trail Boss package will increase the off-road capabilities and make your Colorado better suited for adventure driving. This package is going to give the vehicle a suspension lift of one inch. Under the car, skid plates will be bolted to the front and middle of the underbelly for added protection from moisture, debris, impacts with rough terrain, and such.
The exterior badges of the vehicle with this package will be black. A set of 17″ wheels will be included with the Trail Boss package, and red tow hooks will be installed. This package makes an incredible difference in the off-road abilities, strength, and durability of the vehicle. If you are going to do any off-road driving but don’t see yourself upgrading to the top-of-the-line ZR2 trim, the addition of this package is well-worth the investment.
Towing
The towing capacity of the basic 2022 Colorado with the four-cylinder engine will continue to be limited to no more than 3,500 pounds. If you choose to add the trailering equipment package, the vehicle’s towing abilities will increase to up to 7,000 pounds for the gasoline-powered V6 and 7,700 pounds for the diesel-powered engine. Adding trailer-sway control technology is not necessary because it comes standard on the 2022 Colorado. The vehicle will automatically intervene when it senses excessive side-to-side movement developing in the trailer, preventing a dangerous trailering situation.
Cargo and Comfort
When considering the amount of room and comfort the 2022 model will afford, you must keep in mind that this is not a full-size pickup. However, you will be surprised at the amount of room the cabin of the truck has, and most people say that the front seats of Colorado are as spacious and roomy as the front seats of most full-size pickups.
The main seating room difference is in the back seat area. Even with the crew cab, the rear seat area is a pretty tight fit that is better suited to two passengers but will accommodate three passengers if they are small or sit close together. Under the rear seat, there is a large compartment designed for storing and hauling items. This compartment is very spacious and will give you much-needed cargo space that protects whatever is in it from weather or theft.
The interior of the vehicle is not designed for accomodating large objects but has plenty of space to stash your gear. Of course, this is a pickup truck, and the bed of the truck is either a 41-cubic foot version or an extended 50-cubic foot version, so you are going to have plenty of room to pack what you need. Even better, you can pair the extended bed with the crew cab for the best of both worlds.
What Technology is Included?
We are all getting used to technology, connectivity, and instant access to information, so the idea of driving a vehicle that does not embrace any of these needs is quickly rejected. The Colorado does not have as many advancements in technology as some other vehicles, but it is not a 1994 stone-age model with nothing more than an AM/FM radio and a possible tape deck.
The Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system is accessed using a standard 7-inch touchscreen in the center dash. You will also have a Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth audio streaming that can support up to two devices, and Apple CarPlay and Android Audio capabilities. The touchscreen options are a 7″ display for the lowest trim level and an 8″ screen for the remaining trims. The Chevy MyLink interactions are the best that any manufacturer can offer. It is simply a fabulous feature that Chevy has developed and honed to perfection.
Safety and Reliability
Chevy has a long history of constructing safe, dependable, and reliable vehicles. The Colorado does not have every new safety feature, but it does include the forward collision warning if desired. You can also get lane departure warning sensors and rear parking sensors if you choose to have them included. With or without these extra sensors and warning alerts, the vehicle is safe to drive. The driver just has to be a little more alert and used to the vehicle’s old-school form of no driving assistance, which is another reason why the truck’s price can be kept affordable.
What You Are Getting
With the 2022 Colorado, you are getting a solid pickup with a variety of options. It is available with four-wheel drive with a locking rear differential, a 24-valve V-6 engine with an aluminum block, and an 8-speed automatic transmission. There have been no significant changes between the 2021 model and the newest model. The machine is powerful, and it starts on the first turn of the key.
The V-6 engine has 308 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. With it, the 2022 Colorado will do zero to sixty in about seven seconds and zero to ninety in about fifteen seconds. It has the power and the get-up-and-go you need from your truck. You can expect to get about 21 MPG combined. The fuel mileage is not fabulous, but this is not a little four-cylinder sedan that looks like a roller skate on wheels. It is a serious everyday truck with the power and fortitude you expect from such a vehicle.
You will get a comfortable interior, but it will not be a luxurious interior. The materials used in the interior design and construction are basic and not altogether flattering. They are serviceable, but they do not appear elegant or overly attractive. This is another way that the manufacturer can control the asking price of the vehicle.
An Affordable and Capable Truck
The 2022 Chevy Colorado is an excellent truck. It is a vehicle preferred by hard workers because it is a dependable no-frills option that will get the job done. As a midsize truck, it is also more affordable and better on gas than full-size options. This is a truck that will provide reliable transportation for you and your family without stretching the limits of your bank account. And of course, it is an off-road machine that has been made even better with the addition of the new Trail Boss package on top of the already highly capable Z71 and ZR2 trims.
