Ford has been making its beloved performance vehicle, the Ford Mustang, since 1964. Consumer interest doesn’t seem to be dropping for this car, and Ford continues to make each year’s variety better and better. Fans of the car expect more every year, and the manufacturer did not disappoint with the 2022 Ford Mustang. This car has held onto the classic features that fans of the Mustang have come to expect while incorporating some new surprises that are fun to look at and feel behind the wheel.
Today we’re going to focus on the 2022 Ford Mustang GT Premium. This is the most iconic version of the modern Mustang, combining the V8 engine with premium features to make the ideal muscle car. While the Mach 1 and GT500 may be faster on the track, the GT Premium is substantially more affordable and just as fun on the street. It is also the highest trim available as a convertible if you want to let the wind blow through your hair as you drive.
Power will be no issue in this ride. Pop the hood, and you’ll find Ford’s 5.0L naturally aspirated V8 engine boasting 460 horsepower and 420 lb-ft torque. It’s a lot of fun to drive, and you can tell what a powerful engine it has just from the sound of it. This beauty can go from zero to 60 in under five seconds and reach top speeds of over 150 miles per hour. Plus, it boasts a 10-speed automatic transmission. A six-speed manual is also available. Overall, this car really delivers on the Mustang promise of performance features at an accessible price.
The Exterior
Where the GT Premium really shines is the exterior design. It might be the slickest-looking Mustang to date and almost looks futuristic. While previous renditions sometimes fell victim to a slightly bulkier and less high-end aesthetic, this is one car that looks like it costs triple what it actually does.
Taking a look around the exterior of this beast will reveal some intricate and admirable details. It features optional 15-inch Brembo brakes with six-piston calipers, which are excellent for preventing overheating and coming to a stop safely––both important factors when you push this car to its limits. It’s also loaded with LED lighting that makes it really cool to look at at night. It has LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, and three-dimensional LED taillights. The contrast of these red and amber lights against the paint at night makes this a truly photogenic vehicle that looks right at home on a track. The lights also create optimal visibility in low light conditions.
The 2022 Mustang is rich with distinct and bold lines, giving it that authentic muscle car look. It’s got excellent contouring throughout, including on the roof, on the sides, and on the front and back. Speaking of the grille, it has tons of openings for added cooling, and the back grille has a gorgeous gloss black finish. Meanwhile, on the front, you’ll find an alluring front splitter in a satin black that protrudes for that genuine muscle car aesthetic.
The contouring and sharp lines only work to make the paint job glimmer on this vehicle and make it appear fast, even when it’s at a complete stop. It’s even got that classic large side skirt that you want in a race car and a massive rear diffuser along with sharp fins. Between the way this car looks and sounds, you can expect people to gather around to take photos of it.
The Interior
The interior of the 2022 Mustang GT Premium is a lot of fun. Unlike the budget-oriented lower trims, it’s chock full of gadgets and gizmos that are a pleasure to view and a thrill to use. Let’s start with the gauge cluster, which absolutely must be exquisite in a performance vehicle. It does not disappoint here.
This available 12-inch digital gauge cluster is really unique in that it displays different information, depending on what mode the vehicle is. Toggle between different modes, and you’ll see the tachometer take on a completely different form. It’s worth noting that this car has a quiet mode, so if you have neighbors who don’t quite appreciate the roar of your engine as much as you do, this can help. You can also choose what color the display is in for a more customized interior visual experience. This is possibly the most fun interior feature to play around with.
As for the other display system––the center 8-inch infotainment screen––this has all you could ask for, too. Along with its easy-to-view integrated navigation system, it also offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration to get your smart phone hooked up to your vehicle and easy to use on the go. It’s also got all the app icons you need, climate control, and more. Speaking of climate control, the front boasts three large air vents to get optimal cooling for front-seat passengers.
In the center panel between the steering wheel and passenger side, you’ll find several toggles for things like traction control, steering wheel mode control, comfort mode, normal mode, and sport mode. The layout of these toggles is crisp and easy to navigate (as are many of this car’s features).
Moving on to design, the inside of this car is just stunning. The 2022 Ford Mustang GT Premium is going to have a standard leather interior that feels luxurious and is easy to keep clean. It’s got eye-catching high-contrast stitching throughout, including on the seats, on the steering wheel, and even on some paneling. Many areas boast an interesting perforated design, too, and there are silver accents throughout, including on the door handles, steering wheel controls, and more. The interior looks good but is also designed so as not to distract from what really matters; all of the cool performance features.
The standard front seats have really nice bolstering for ultimate comfort and automatic recline to help you get in that perfect position to cruise. However, you can upgrade to the optional Recaro sports seats for even greater comfort. The steering wheel has a big silver pony logo that true fans of the car will love. All in all, the inside has a luxurious look and is incredibly comfortable.
Passenger Comfort
We’ll be honest right off the bat: performance vehicles are meant to be enjoyed from the front seats. Though the Mustang is a four-seater, those back seats are really just an arbitrary convenience for those times you’re using it as a passenger vehicle. But we know that true fans of this car are in it for that front-seat, behind-the-wheel thrill.
With that in mind, the backseats are going to be a bit tight for anyone. However, getting in and out is fairly easy thanks to the grab handle on the front seats that lets you flip down a front seat quickly. The back seats also fold down completely flat, so should you want to extend the storage space in the trunk, you can easily do so. If you only need some extra storage space, the good news is that the back seats do fold down independently of each other, so you can just fold down one when necessary.
One way the 2022 Mustang defies muscle car stereotypes is by actually having a rather large trunk space. These cars aren’t known for a lot of cargo area, but Ford does a pretty good job in this region. Another small detail that Mustang lovers will enjoy is the key fob that lets you remotely start the ignition, so you can listen to the purr of that beautiful engine from afar (not too far).
High Thrills at A Low Cost
Ford once again delivered on its promise to offer track-worthy performance features at a price that nearly anybody can afford. The 2022 rendition of the Mustang is loaded with features that are a lot of fun to play with and boasts an incredibly sleek design that puts it a cut above previous models––especially in the GT Premium trim. We expect fans of the Mustang who are ready for an upgrade to race to dealerships to pick up one of these beauties.
